Love That Shirley Bassey
From The Daily News (about 1973/74)
Bassey in concert after you say that the audience response epitomises
the adulation a performer can evoke? Her fans don't need words to persuade
them to love her, and no words could dissuade them.
When a performer is interrupted by cheers just for saying, "Last year
when I was her ..." you know that that performer has the audience signed,
sealed and delivered.
Ms. Bassey is singing at Carnegie Hall through tomorrow night and emotionally
pulverising her listeners. Even before she appeared on opening night Thursday,
they had broken into applause just for the opening bars of her songs played
by a 28-piece orchestra in an introductory medley.
When she walked on stage, the audience rose to it's feet, and several
cries of "Whoo!" were heard among the applause. "Whoo!" indeed. Ms. Bassey,
who has a very nice body, dressed it - in her usual show-off fashion -
in a clinging scarlet sequined gown, cut very low in the back and with
a flesh-covered base in the front above the waist, sequined just enough
to keep her from appearing braless.
