Part 3 - The Auction
Peggy's Report, Jun 2005

The auction was enjoyable and fascinating. It started at 11.00am on 15th June. The good-humoured auctioneer and his assistant stood on a podium in the furniture area. The bidders sat on the antique sofas and chairs. Compared to the auction of gowns at Christie's it was an informal suburban event. But a unique chance to buy something with provenance from the Diamond Dame.

Lounging about.. on antiques!   Will someone please buy that bed?

A member of Rosebery's staff told me that the proceeds are going to charity. He wasn't sure which one, but Shirley would discretely choose a worthwhile cause. As fans already know, she gave £250,000 from the sale of gowns to two charities in Wales.

The auction was exciting, fast and fun. As the bidding progressed it became clear that there was no rhyme nor reason to the amounts. Lot 861, the leopard print double bed and ottoman, went for only £100; while Lot 808, two carved figures, sold for £2,200. Lot 780, a Giles cartoon, fetched £780 while Lot 836, a huge Chinese 8-fold screen, was given away for £90.

It was all over in an hour. No celebrities, no TV cameras and only a few telephone bidders. I met some charming fellow fans, and we reminisced about the stunning performances we had all experienced. And we swapped views on Shirley's future appearances.

A list of winning bids is given below, hope I got them right.
