Shirley's
Style Has A Captivating Power From Kent Messenger, by Steven Farrance, Sep 1 1998
No sign of objectors as 8,000 flock to village
show, thousands turned out to watch Shirley Bassey sing her
heart out in Kent yesterday.
People of all ages came from as far as Germany and France to watch the
show in the village of Teston, near Maidstone.
More than 400 people ranging from musicians to technicians put the £200,000
show together.
The grounds were not completely packed, but about 8,000 of the expected
10,000 audience saw the spectacular.
There was controversy surrounding the concert at one stage from villagers
in Teston. They were worried about noise and traffic it would generate.
But a Kent Police spokesman said there was no trouble getting everyone
in during the day and traffic flowed smoothly.
Kent Army Cadets were on hand to guide motorists through the grounds
of the 17th century building as fans arrived.
Maidstone Mayor Robin Judd was there to enjoy the show. He said: "The hospitality has been superb. Food and wine has been available
and there has been such a happy atmosphere here throughout the day."
"I am sorry if the concert has caused any inconvenience for villagers
nearby, but a lot of people are enjoying themselves in a lovely setting
for one night. I don't think that's a bad thing."
John and Diane Marsh of South Street, Whitstable,
got VIP tickets to the concert.
Mr Marsh said: "I've been a Shirley Bassey fan for 30 years.
She is simply one of the best entertainers."
