London's Dominion Theatre Plays Host To Prince Charles
With a cast that included Kylie Minogue, Ronan Keating, Westlife and Shirley Bassey, it was hardly surprising that the Prince of Wales enjoyed himself at this year's Royal Variety Performance.
Singer Jane McDonald opened the show, performing Hey Pachucco, before Ben Elton - with a little help from Ronnie Corbett - introduced Kylie Minogue. Kylie looked as amazing as ever as she performed Spinning Around and her new single Please Stay with a dozen dancers.
Another big highlight of the night was the star of the hit film Little Voice, Jane Horrocks, who impersonated Marilyn Monroe in the classic film Some Like It Hot singing Dream A Little Dream.
Ronan Keating Brought things back to the '90s, singing Life Is A Rollercoaster, before The King And I star Elaine Paige sang Getting To Know You. Soon after, an electrifying Shirley Bassey took to the stage in what was the performance of the evening. She sang, among others, I Am What I Am and Goldfinger. The second half saw Richard Stilgoe and peter Skellern gently rib Carol Smilie, Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmockin a song about home improvements. Rowan Atkinson as Captain Blackadder, poked fun at the British Army, before the royal harpist, Catrin Fich, performed with Welsh opera singer Bryn Terfel. Next came Lionel Richie, followed by Ben Elton's introduction of Josie Walker. Westlife sang a medley of their number one hits, before Jane McDonald and Bryn Terfel fronted the Christmas carol finale. Performers then converged on the stage to sing the national anthem. After the show, Laurie Mansfield, life president of the Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund, introduced the Prince to the dazzling cast.
