Shirley Bassey has to live with an enormous feeling of guilt

She has the legs that would a twenty year old person drive jealous. Shirley Bassey; a world star, grandmother of four grandsons and one granddaughter and inhabitant of Monaco. She works very hard to keep in good shape. Just before she put the 900 mainly Dutch guests of the spectacular Flying Doctors Gala in Monte Carlo really on fire, she finished her daily routine of two hours of fitness and one hour of vocal training. "Really a top performance" qualifies the 63 years old diva just after the show. "I was even more touched than the audience. It's been some time that I was greeted with a standing ovation. This gives me the power to go on for another ten years..."



"I'm a better grandmother than a mother", says Shirley Bassey while she is in her dressing room of the world-famous Sporting Club in Monaco carefully placing the photographs of her four grandsons - the youngest is 5, the oldest 21. After the last rehearsal for the Gala that evening she has some time free for Privé during the afternoon. Dame Shirley, as she is now officially known since she is knighted by QUEEN ELISABETH, speaks in a very relaxed manner.

"The more successful you are, the worse your private life gets. My daughters Sharon and Samantha and my adopted son Mark always used to cry very hard when the suitcases stood ready in the hall: mama was leaving again. I was lived, sometimes I read in the newspapers that next week I had to perform on the other side of the world. It still gives me an enormous feeling of guilt. If I just see now how Sharon is there for her children. But it also has to do with the men. I've been married twice. And both my husbands became my manager. I took financially care of them. And that was maybe the wrong way to start things off."

Shirley Veronica Bassey did not have a happy private life. She was discovered as an sixteen year old singing in a revue in Cardiff, within a month she got a record-deal, scored a hit and left, as she says herself, on tour "for the rest of my life". A year later she became pregnant and gave birth to her daughter Sharon (now 46).

Her first husband Kenneth Hume committed suicide just after their divorce in 1965. Her son Mark whom she adopted with her second husband doesn't want to know her anymore. Her daughter Samantha committed suicide in 1985 by throwing herself of a bridge in Bristol. Samantha was then 22 years old. After that Shirley couldn't sing for six years, but made her comeback with This is my life.



Monaco is now the new home to Dame Shirley Bassey. "Here I find my peace between the tours", she says. "I just got back from a big tour through America and some performances in Scotland. The nicest thing about Monaco is that nobody bothers you at all. In August I had all my four grandsons over for a visit. I could sit just undisturbed on the beach, that's great. I live in a big apartment and enjoy the quietness of it. Just relaxing on the sofa watching a soap or a cooking show on the telly, and cooking for myself: spaghetti, curry with rice and salmon." She grins: "They say that I'm a spoiled superstar and maybe I might have been that sometimes, but now for instance I haven't even drunk any champagne for a month. In Monaco I like being just myself." There have been all kind of rumours about stopping with performing. "Ah, merely gossip", reacts the diva Shirley Bassey laconically. "I don't train for nothing every day so hard to keep in good shape. Two hours running, stepping, power lifting and Yoga to top it all. There has just been released a remix of my old numbers and a dance-album of my songs and that album is a huge success in France, Germany, Spain and also in America. So that means plenty of performing. Furthermore, I'm recording a Christmas-album and we are looking for new material for a really new album. I listen to Italian material, because those songs fit very well my voice if they're translated."

Note: With the "Christmas-album" Shirley Bassey may have meant the collection The Greatest Hits - This Is My Life, which has been released end of 2000, but it does sadly not contain any newly recorded song.

Shirley Bassey doesn't feel any real competition of young people. "The funny thing is at at this moment that the dancesteps and the look is more important than the voice. There are even many singers who just pretend that they are singing. And some really good voices seems rather fickle. So I think it is very strange that such a good voice as Mariah Carey all of a sudden wants to become an actress. As if being a singer isn't enough..."

Ze heeft benen waar menige twintigjarige jaloers op is. SHIRLEY BASSEY; wereldster, oma van vier kleinzoons en één kleindochter en inwoonster van Monaco werkt keihard om in vorm te blijven. Voor ze de bijna 900 merendeels Nederlandse gasten van het spetterende Flying Doctors Gala in Monte Carlo in vuur en vlam zette, had ze er haar dagelijkse twee uur sporttraining en een uur stemtraining net op zitten. 'Een topoptreden,' oordeeit de 63-jarige diva ook zelf na afloop. 'Maar ik was meer ontroerd dan het publiek. Het is lang geleden dat ik ben BEGROET met een staande ovatie. Dit geeft me kracht om nog 10 jaar door te gaan...'

Na de laatste repetitie voor het gala die avond heeft ze 's middags tijd gemaakt voor Privé. Dame Shirley, zoals ze officieel heet sinds ze door KONINGIN ELIZABETH is geridderd, praat ontspannen.

'Hoe succesvoller je wordt, hoe slechter het gaat met je privé-leven. Mijn dochters SHARON en SAMANTHA en mijn geadopteerde zoon MARK gingen vroeger altijd keihard huilen als er koffers in de hal stonden: mama gaat weer weg. Ik ben geleefd, las soms in de krant dat ik de week daarop aan de andere kant van de wereld zou optreden. Dat geeft me nog altijd een geweldig schuldgevoel. Ats ik kijk hoe Sharon nu voor haar kinderen is. Ach het heeft ook met mannen te maken. Ik ben twee keer getrouwd geweest. En alle twee mijn mannen werden mijn manager. Ik zorgde financieel voor hen. Dat was misschien het verkeerde uitgangspunt.'

Shirley Veronica Bassey heeft geen gelukkig privé-leven achter de rug. Ze werd ontdekt toen ze als zestienjarige bij de revue in Cardiff ging zingen. Ze kreeg binnen een maand een platencontract, scoorde een hit en vertrok onmiddellijk, zoals ze zelf zegt, 'voor de rest van mijn leven' op tournee. Een jaar later werd ze zwanger en beviel ze van haar dochter Sharon (nu 46).

Haar eerste man KENNETH HUME pleegde zelfmoord kort na hun scheiding in 1965. Haar met haar tweede man geadopteerde zoon Mark wil niets meer met haar te maken hebben. Haar dochter Samantha pleegde in 1985 zelfmoord door zich van een brug in Bristol te gooien. Samantha was toen 22. Shirley heeft daarna zes jaar niet kunnen zingen, maar kwam terug met This is my life.

Monaco is het nieuwe thuis van Dame Shirley Bassey. 'Ik vind hier rust tussen de tournees,' zegt ze. 'Ik ben nu net terug van een grote tournee door Amerika en een paar optredens in Schotland. Het fijne van Monaco is dat je er niet wordt lastiggevallen. In augustus heb ik hier een maand alle vier mijn kleinzoons op bezoek gehad. Kon ik gewoon ongestoord op het strand zitten. Dat was echt geweldig. Ik woon in een groot appartement en heb het er echt rustig. Lekker op de bank hangen en naar een soap of een kookshow op tv kijken. En voor mezelf koken. Spaghetti, kerrie met rijst of zalm.' Ze grinnikt. 'Ze zeggen dat ik een verwende ster ben. En dat ben ik wellicht ook best een beetje geweest. Maar ik drink nu bijvoorbeeld al een maand geen champagne meer. In Monaco ben ik lekker mezelf.' Er zijn allerlei geruchten geweest dat ze zou stoppen met optreden. 'Ach allemaal roddels,' reageert diva Shirley Bassey laconiek. 'Ik train niet voor niks elke dag zo hard om in vorm te blijven. Twee uur bestaande uit hardlopen, step, krachttraining en ter afsluiting yoga. Er is net een remix uit van mijn oude nummers en een dance-album van mijn songs en dat album is een groot succes in Frankrijk, Duitsland, Spanje en nu ook in Amerika. Dat betekent dus volop optredens. Verder ben ik een kerst-cd aan het opnemen en zijn we aan het zoeken naar nieuw materiaal voor een echt nieuw album. Ik luister naar Italiaans materiaal, omdat die songs vertaald op de een of andere manier altijd passen bij mijn stem.'

Echte concurrentie van jonge mensen voelt Shirley Bassey niet. 'Het gekke is dat in deze tijd de dansjes en het uiterlijk belangrijker zijn dan de stem. Er zijn zelfs veel zangeressen die net doen of ze zingen. En echte goede stemmen zijn noga wispelturig. Zo vind ik het maar raar dat een grote stem als MARIAH CAREY dan weer opeens actrice wi worden. Alsof het vak zangeres niet goed genoeg is...'
