Shirley Steals World Cup Show From Daily Express, by David Smith, Oct 2 1999

Superstar Shirley Bassey upstaged the Prince of Wales yesterday with an extraordinary dragon dress at the launch of the rugby World Cup in Cardiff.

The singer form Tiger Bay, in a sequinned gown representing the Welsh national flag, sang the competition anthem at the new £126million Millennium Stadium.

Charles made a short speech, including a little Welsh, to declare the 20-nation tournament officially open before the roof slid back at the world's biggest covered arena.

But it was Shirley, 62, who stole the show. A capacity crowd of 72,500 packed the magnificent stadium and millions worldwide watched the ceremony on TV in an estimated 147 countries.
