Legend Shirley is Just Spectacular
From West Midlands Express and Star, by Tony Reynolds, Jun 11 2003

She came, she sang and she was absolutely brilliant. Dame Shirley Bassey showed why after 50 years in showbusiness she is still one of the world's top performers.

Dame Shirley Bassey sings to a packed arena of fans at the NEC last night. The NEC was packed with fans eager to see the singer from Tiger Bay in Cardiff live and they were not disappointed.

From the minute the theme to Goldfinger started to the final walk off stage, 90-plus minutes later, the fans were treated to a spectacular that will live with them for ever.

Forget all the fancy computer wizardry and lighting, this was how it should be - a first class orchestra backing one of music's legends.

She may be 66 but she took hold of the audience by the scruff of the neck and never let them go. The tour is backed by an album called Thanks for the Years and she covered many of her great songs including early ones like Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me and As Long As He Needs Me mixed with classics like Hey Big Spender and If You Go Away.

The audience loved it and so did she. Her enthusiasm is as great now as it has ever been and every song was given 100 per cent.

Shirley was one of the first artists to cover Beatles material and she did them proud with renditions of Something and the belter Hey Jude. She also produced a brilliant version of the great Doors hit Light My Fire.

As she slid past me in her stretch limo after the concert I thought: "Not just Thanks For The Years Shirley, but here's to a many more". And I think I thought for everyone
