Golden Girl Shirley Goes Back to Her Cardiff Roots From South Wales Echo, Jun 11 2003
Golden girl Shirley Bassey celebrates 50 years in showbiz tonight with a special
show back home in Cardiff.
Dame Shirley is at the city's International Arena as part of her Golden Jubilee
tour.
She will be singing on stage less than a mile from where she was born and
brought up in Cardiff's docklands 66 years ago.
Tonight's is the fourth of a five-concert jubilee tour that has already taken in
Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham last night.
Tickets for the Cardiff show sold out within hours of going on sale last year
and Arena general manager Graham Walters is expecting an extra special night.
"Dame Shirley has a special place in the heart of the Cardiff Arena. She opened
the venue and was the first to perform here, and tonight's show promises to be
another memorable moment for us.
"It will be even more spectacular than normal - very flamboyant, with lots of
different costumes ."
The tour ends at the Wembley Arena in London on Saturday.
