Shirley
Proves There's Nothing Like A Dame From The Belfast Telegraph, By Eddie McIlwaine, 6 Jun 2003
If ever you thought that style was going out of fashion you just had to take a
deep breath and observe Dame Shirley Bassey.
Here she was at the Odyssey in her sexy gold sequin and chiffon gown, handing
out carnations graciously, receiving presents with panache and launching yet
another marathon tour of all her favourite cities and with a new CD heading into
the charts.
After the likes of Big Brother and that other dubious television show down in
the jungle, it made a change to watch a lady of substance behaving with
impeccable taste on a live stage.
And charming us with golden oldies such as the theme song from Love Story, Kiss
Me Honey Honey Kiss Me and Something, which sums her up completely.
This Dame restored our belief in womankind for me and every other man in the
audience. Don't think of Shirley as just a big voice and a Big Spender - there's
a touch of romance in there too.
This Dame at 66 is celebrating her golden jubilee playing the big arenas. She
has been around the same length of time as that other impeccable lady at
Buckingham Palace. And neither, has any thoughts about retiring.
"Put my feet up? "Never, never, never," chuckled this Dame last night. "I'd die
if I couldn't go out there and sing."
