Tonight we honour one of
Wales' most treasured and glamorous stars: Dame Shirley Bassey. A legend
in her own lifetime, Dame Shirley has put Wales firmly on the world map
dazzling thousands of people in show- stopping concerts throughout the
world.
Last November, Dame Shirley turned her attention back to Wales and used
her 50th Anniversary in show business to help two charities in the
Principality. Christie's was the venue for a fabulously glamorous
auction of 50 of her concert gowns.
That night, Dame Shirley stole her own show with a surprise personal
attendance, impromptu anecdotes and songs, getting the bidding well
underway with 'Big Spender' and raising the tension for the famous
'Diamond Dress1 to fever pitch with lines from 'Diamonds are Forever'.
It certainly was a night to remember!
The auction raised £125,000 each for the Noah's Ark Appeal and the Royal
Welsh College of Music and Drama - a simply magnificent result.
The Noah's Ark Appeal was thrilled to be chosen as one of Dame Shirley's
charities and tonight we say a heartfelt thank you.
Dame Shirley, we are delighted that the children's cancer outpatient
unit at the new Children's Hospital for Wales will bear your name.
Welcome back to your hometown to share this special evening of
celebration.
