Lot 2
1950s-1980s - Douglas Darnell And Another |
<<PREVIOUS LOT |
NEXT LOT>>

Please note that the long-sleeved high-necked
gown in this lot was made by Sara Perceval.
Two black evening gowns, comprising: one by
Douglas Darnell which he christened The Merry Widow - a halterneck gown of black
silk faille richly embroidered with glass imitation jet beads in a foliate
pattern, scattered with glass imitation faceted jet pendants, the scalloped hem
graduating from knee to ankle; and a long-sleeved high-necked gown of black lace
over a black shift, the flower pattern of the lace picked out with shimmering
black sequins and imitation jet beads, with asymmetrical, lightly scalloped
hemline (2)
The halterneck gown in this lot has been altered several times between the late
1950s and 1980s and is now missing it's ostrich trim to the hem. The gown was
due to be altered again for several years but remains unfinished. The photograph
illustrated here is taken from the programme for Dame Shirley's U.K. Tour, 1982
and shows her wearing this gown on stage around that time.
