A gleaming stage gown by Douglas Darnell, the gown with fitted bodice of black
silk chiffon densely embroidered with black bugle beads and scattered with
Swarovski 'diamonds' the thin shoulder straps crossing above a low-cut back with
two long strands terminating in large tassels of glass imitation jet beads and
aurora borealis pendant crystals, the bias cut skirt with flowing train slit
centrally to the upper leg, the central bodice, shoulder straps, slit and hem
set with bands of clear crystals, the lower skirt lined in silver silk tissue
Weight: approx. 5kg.
This gown has been altered several times over the years and began life as a
stage coat worn over the gown in Lot 1 in 1960.
Dame Shirley wore this dress at the Royal Albert Hall during her U.K. Concert
Tour, 1991. She also wore this gown on stage on various occasions in the 1980s,
including her performance at St. David's Hall, Cardiff, 1985.
