Description & Notes

Two voluminous sleeveless stage coats with flowing trains by Douglas Darnell, one of gold brocade or matalassé, the caped collar and edges trimmed with a deep border of black ostrich feathers, the collar scattered with gold flower-shaped sequins, lined in gold silk tissue; the other with black lace ground embroidered with black iridescent sequins and large electric blue rhinestones, trimmed with close bands of black ostrich feathers, lined in electric blue silk tissue (2)

The photograph illustrated shows Dame Shirley wearing the black coat in this lot at the Royal Festival Hall, 1996. Darnell told us that the black and gold coat in this lot used to be worn over the 'Butterfly' dress. [See lot 11]
