Two voluminous sleeveless stage coats with flowing
trains by Douglas Darnell, one of gold brocade or matalassé, the caped collar
and edges trimmed with a deep border of black ostrich feathers, the collar
scattered with gold flower-shaped sequins, lined in gold silk tissue; the other

electric blue rhinestones, trimmed with close bands of black ostrich feathers,

The photograph illustrated shows Dame Shirley wearing the black coat in this lot
at the Royal Festival Hall, 1996. Darnell told us that the black and gold coat
