Perceval |
<<PREVIOUS LOT |
NEXT LOT>>

Two stage outfits, comprising: a flamboyant
gypsy-style coat by Douglas Darnell, the full red cloqué silk tissue skirt slit
to the waist, with flowing train, the hem decorated with bands of white, red and
black ribbon and gold sequins, the fitted black velvet bodice trimmed with a
deep border of large Swarovski 'hyazinth' crystals, gold sequins and imitation
pearls, with balloon sleeves of gold patterned gauze similarly trimmed at the
cuffs; and
- a long-sleeved gown by Sara Perceval, the red gauze ground embroidered overall
with red sequins, the straight skirt slit to the knee at the back, trimmed at
the neck, shoulders, waist and hem with deep frills, with a matching belt
applied with a bow.
Darnell recalled that Dame Shirley wore the gypsy-style coat in this lot to open
the show on various occasions in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The photograph
pictured shows her wearing this gown backstage with her musical director Brian
Fahey. The other photograph illustrated shows Dame Shirley wearing the red
sequinned dress in this lot in Bournemouth during her 1991 U.K. tour.
