Two gowns comprising: a short-sleeved evening gown
of red velour with black lamé spots simulating animal skin, with cowl back,
split to the knee and ruched to the waist at the back, labelled inside Bruce
Oldfield; and
- an elegant sleeveless high-necked stage gown with tulip skirt, the
natural-toned silk ground covered with red net embroidered overall with red and
orange beads in a flowerhead and foliate pattern, with red silk train to the
back flowing from the waist over a bustle, lined in tangerine organza, labelled
inside Tomasz Starzewski, accompanied by a matching pair of red silk sling-back
shoes with stilleto heel, labelled on the insole Jimmy Choo.
The photograph illustrated shows Dame Shirley wearing the Tomasz Starzewski gown
during a performance at the Chelsea Arts Club Ball, The Royal Albert Hall,
London, 12th October, 1992. This same dress was also worn by her during filming
for her first feature film La Passione in 1996. The album cover illustrated,
Keep The Music Playing, 1991, features Dame
Shirley wearing the Bruce Oldfield gown in this lot.
