Description & Notes

Two stage coats by Douglas Darnell, one a fitted coat, 1966, of canary yellow cloqué silk fastening at the waist with an elegant clasp of vari-shaped Swarovski clear crystals, the long sleeves embellished with close bands of graduating tones of yellow ostrich feathers, with flowing train, lined in pale yellow satin; the other a long-sleeved voluminous stage coat of emerald green velvet with flowing train, trimmed at the neck, front, cuffs and hem with lime green feathers, lined in bright green satin.

The yellow coat in this lot was occasionally worn over the white 'harem' dress [lot 49] for opening the show. Darnell recalls that his design for this coat was inspired by a 1930s film costume worn by Jean Harlow.
