A new exhibition in the Swarovski Crystal Gallery in Innsbruck displays glittering gowns belonging to the famous pop icon Dame Shirley Bassey.
To mark the opening of the newly designed Swarovski Crystal Gallery in Innsbruck on 3rd June 2004, the world’s largest producer of finest cut crystal has a very special attraction in store for its visitors. On this day, for the first time in Austria, an exhibition will commence in the largest Swarovski shop in the world, displaying a collection of magnificent gowns, studded with Swarovski crystals that belonged to the international superstar, Dame Shirley Bassey. Swarovski has been following the path of the Welsh-born singer since the middle of the 1950s. The designer Douglas Darnell created numerous gowns for the diva’s appearances and finished them off exquisitely with Swarovski crystals.
Swarovski purchased the singer’s gowns at Christie’s of London as part of a charity auction event, the total value of the gowns on display in Innsbruck amounting to approximately € 130,000. Among the highlights is the “Diamond Dress” that is studded with 156,000 Swarovski crystals. It is one of the first glittering gowns designed by Darnell for Bassey and weighs six kilograms.
Dame Shirley Bassey has enjoyed a secure spot in the world of show business for more than 50 years. She thrills her adoring fans through her glamour, special charm and one of the most sensational voices in the history of pop music. Among her best-known hits are “Big Spender”, the theme song for the James Bond Film “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are forever”.
With exhibition design by Karl Walter, the arched gallery will become the imaginary stage for superstar Shirley Bassey and convey all the flair of show and glamour of the 70s and 80s. The jet-black room in which they appear and coloured light spots make sure the extravagant gowns and crystals sparkle exquisitely.
The exhibition in the Swarovski Crystal Gallery in Innsbruck will be on show until June 2005. Entrance is free.
