Glossy Book Marks Cardiff's Centenary
From BBC Online, Jun 2005

A glossy coffee table book on the history of Cardiff has been launched to mark the city's centenary. The 192-page publication features images by photographer David Hurn and covers Cardiff's industrial birth up to its status as a European capital.

The book is called 'Cardiff - Rebirth of a Capital' and includes interviews with some famous sons and daughters, as well as the people "who keep the city going". Cardiff's centenary as a city falls on 28 October 2005 and its 50th birthday as a capital on 20 December.

Dame Shirley Bassey, who wrote the introduction to the book, said that "the Tiger Bay I left as a girl, hoping to make it big in the big wide world, had to change. Few of us raised in those friendly old neighbourhoods would recognise them today. Cardiff changed because it had to change with the world around it, and a lot of thinking and imagination has gone into planning how best to get that change right. Now we're on everyone's map!"

The book has been produced following a collaboration between Cardiff council and academics at Cardiff University and is available in both English and Welsh language editions. For more information or to order a copy visit the Official Cardiff 2005 Website.

Mar 19 2005

Dame Shirley Bassey and her friend Beaudoin Mills attended the 'Brazil' Rose Ball at The Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting Monte Carlo. The event was in aid of the Princess Grace Foundation and is considered one of the most important events in the Monte Carlo social calendar.

The theme of this year's event was Brazil, and the guests enjoyed a carnival-like atmosphere as tribute was paid to the South American country synonymous with festivities, colour and rhythm. There was a variety of performances from Brazilian musicians and tropical dancers which took guests through a virtual journey across Brazil.

Jorge Ben played a flamboyant tribute to Brazilian composer and culture minister Gilberto Gil who won a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 1998, and who was also present at the event. The Salle des Etoiles reverberated through the night thanks to the joie de vivre of Brazil’s irresistible and bewitching rhythms.

Mother Of The Bride Will Be Clutching Bassey's Bag
From Western Mail, Jan 21 2005

Carole Carlow will be making a grand entrance at her daughter's wedding this year - clutching a designer bag which once belonged to Dame Shirley Bassey. The Cardiff-born singer donated the beige Chanel bag to the Western Mail's charity auction to raise funds for the tsunami appeal.

Her fans flocked to bid for the bag - a 100% calfskin Cambon Ligne tote, but Carole (pictured right) is now the proud owner after placing the highest bid, of £500. She will carry the bag - which is intertwined with the famous Chanel logo Cs and has been signed inside by Dame Shirley - at her daughter Anne-Marie's wedding in October. "I will take it to my daughter's wedding. I haven't got my outfit yet but I will now choose one to fit in with the bag," she said.

The receptionist lives in Southampton and found out about the auction after her friend saw it advertised on the internet. "I'm a big fan of Shirley Bassey and have seen her performing live many times," said 61-year-old Carole. "Although I've not seen a photograph of the bag I decided to bid for it as the money is going to such a good cause."

Carole is a fan of Dame Shirley's sense of style. She already owns one of Dame Shirley's evening dresses after attending an auction of the singer's designer gowns at Christie's in aid of the Noah's Ark Appeal, for the Children's Hospital in Wales.

Many celebrities donated items to the Western Mail auction, raising £14,000 so far for the Disasters Emergency Committee. A signed guitar from the Manic Street Preachers raised £2,001, a print and an original drawing by Sir Kyffin Williams raised £4,500, a dress by Julien Macdonald, £1,000 and a T-shirt by Ioan Gruffudd and Matthew Rhys fetched £500.

Shirley Bassey Dazzles Onlookers In Berwick
Adapted from Berwick Today, Jan 20 2005

Dame Shirley Bassey dazzled onlookers as she arrived at Berwick Station on her way to the Berwickshire Hunt Ball. But she soon realised her designer footwear was too flimsy to withstand the Scottish countryside used for the Berwickshire Hunt. Dame Shirley and friend Liz Brewer, who accompanied her on the trip, had to make an impromptu shopping trip to Berwick to buy appropriate footwear. Ms Brewer said the Dame had bought some 'wonderful' tiger print Wellingtons at New Look in Berwick and they had both treated themselves to mock suede skirts.

The singer wore a dress by celebrity couturier Eric Way which comprised a tartan silk skirt and cashmere black beaded top. After taking lessons earlier in the evening, she danced the first dance 'Dashing White Sergeant' with Lord Adrian Palmer who was also her partner in the second dance. Liz Brewer said that "Considering she didn't have a class in the second dance, she was one of the best there. She had such a good time, she really did! She was almost telling everyone else how to do it by the end."

Dame Shirley arrived by train at Berwick on Friday and spent the weekend at Duns Castle as a guest of Alick and Aline Hay. Ms Brewer is a friend of Aline Hay and had been trying to persuade Dame Shirley to come to the annual ball for some time. The singer, most famous for rousing Bond themes had been due to attend four years ago but went down with flu and had to cancel. During her stay, Dame Shirley joined the Hunt meet at Easter Cruiksfield when she chatted to hunt supporters. She also enjoyed walks around Duns Castle Lake.
