Sleeve Note

A star overnight. Generally speaking one of the most misleading and incorrect phrases used in connection with the entertainment industry, for most people in show business will agree, so-called overnight stardom (if it comes at all) invariably entails years of study, rehearsals, third-rate tours and many heartbreaks, But occasionally someone appears, who, greatly gifted, attains sureness of touch in a comparatively short period - though not, of course, without hard work. In recent times the outstanding example of a phenomenally quick rise to stardom has been provided by Shirley Bassey. Little more than a year ago Jack Hylton gave this brilliant young artist her first significant break by including her in his production "Such Is Life" at the Adelphi Theatre. Suffice to say she stopped the show and in the following days the national Press gave her rave notices.

Some time after this, Shirley had the further good fortune to be spotted by Major Donald Neville-Willing, the impresario whose responsibility it is to secure the world's greatest stars to appear at the famous Cafe de Paris. It said said much for his artistic judgement and intuition when he engaged Miss Bassey to appear at this famous venue. Once again she proved triumphant and was soon booked for Las Vegas and Hollywood where she has recently repeated her success. On hearing the artistry displayed in this live recording, taken during her act at the Cafe de Paris, it will be obvious that Shirley Bassey is no lucky amateur but a star who is here to stay.

And on the sleeve of the British issue the sleeve note continues:
...and one of whom we, in Britain, can be truly proud.
