Sleeve Note
From the Italian album

As one of the most popular singers in the world during the last two decades, Shirley Bassey is in a class of her own. Her distinctive style, which so successfully manages to express her varied experiences in so surprisingly rich lyrical terms, has won this outstanding artists a following all over the world.

By grafting the expressive richness of her black heritage onto her Welsh spontaneity, Shirley then assimilated - by mastering a rare technique - the traditional elegance of London town and the inventive inspiration of the Australian "new world" - two influences which were already apparent in her concerts during the early '60s.

Her success was instantaneous: the power in her voice and the sensitivity shown in her performances (harmonised in her sophisticated image), assured Shirley a vast following of "easy listening" fans in every corner of the globe and also enabled her within a short space of time to shoot to stardom and feel at home in any kind of repertory.

In Italy, for example, the fans (who'd already got to know her '65 with the sensational hit Goldfinger - the title track from the James Bond film of the same name), acknowledged her stardom in '68 when she beautifully sang La Vita in Italian at the Sanremo Festival. From then on Shirley has remained a real favourite in Italy as a top artist, by keeping the hungry fans satisfied with the release of a long string of albums and through live and TV appearances which have always lived up to expectations.

Considered to be more of a concert than a "hit-parade" artists (there's nothing coincidental in the fact that she's one of the stars most in demand on the elegant Las Vegas stages), Shirley Bassey, whether she sings new songs especially written for her or "evergreens", always succeeds in conquering her audience: something that this album, which includes some of her best known hits, fully confirms.
