Review
From Heat Magazine, by Johnny Davis, Jun 2002

In a nutshell:
A speedily-released, and mercifully edited, compilation of the Party At The Palace Jubilee concert, which attracted a crowd of one million and was watched in 60 countries. Features performers with a combined age of 1,278.

What's it like?
By turns entertaining, embarrassing, touching and in and out of tune. The CD spares us the eyesores that were Phil Collins' tracksuit bottoms and Bryan Adams' beard, but, as you'd expect with such a concert, the performances are hit and miss. The day relied heavily on artists who peaked in the 60s and 70s - with even the few contemporary stars covering golden oldies, Pop Idol style. Consequently, you wonder (a) What's British music been up to since the last Jubilee? (b) Why didn't anyone book a Robbie Williams or a George Michael and (c) Who thought Atomic Kitten were really up to covering Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' fantastic Dancing In The Street? Too often classic songs were ruined by the addition of inadequate singers. Will Young wrestles manfully with We Are The Champions, but he's no Freddie Mercury. And the addition of Emma Bunton to Brian Wilson's Good Vibrations is horrible. Elsewhere, Brian Wilson and Rod Stewart do themselves proud with versions of God Only Knows and Handbags And Glad rags respectively, while the currently inescapable Queen get plenty of chances to plug their West End musical. For sheer novelty, this is possibly the only concert were you'll hear the Peter Pan Of Pop (Cliff Richard) followed by the Prince Of Darkness (Ozzy Osbourne).

How many good tracks?
Eleven, out of 21.

Best track:
Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger

Worst track:
Atomic Kitten's Dancing In The Street.

Verdict:
For souvenir collectors and diehard fans of The Queen/Queen only. Since there are superior versions of all these songs elsewhere, you'd be better off investing in a decent 60s compilation.
