The Party's Over
Sleeve Note
One would have to a master of the understatement to refer to SHIRLEY BASSEY as simply a 'perennial superstar'. To put into mere words the incredible career of this international performer is an almost impossible task.
It is hard to believe that her first chart success came in 1957...with, of course, Banana Boat Song. It proved to be the forerunner of countless international hits, spread over no fewer than five decades. 'Shirley Bassey - The Love Album" contains its fair share of those classic hits from a truly great singer.
The opening track Something, written by George Harrison, was a No 4 hit for Shirley in 1970, staying in the charts for an incredible 21 weeks. This unique collection also includes such greats as With These Hands, which entered the charts no less than three times in 1960, and As Long As He Needs Me from Lionel Bart's 'Oliver,' which reached No. 2 in the same year. You'll Never Know was one of three chart successes from 1961. Tonight, from West Side Story, and What Now My Love both achieved hit status the following year.
Shirley Bassey has an amazing ability to add something unique and new to songs we may have heard many times before. To hear her make her own such standards as The Look Of Love, You Made Me Love You, Time After Time and I Wish You Love gives fresh insight into these timeless classics.
Love Story is not only the title of the 1971
hit featured here, but also aptly describes the ongoing public adoration, for
Miss Bassey. So it is only fitting that Shirley Bassey, one of the best-loved
singers of our generation, should be celebrated with this collection of love
songs. Although the last track featured here may be The Party's Over, the
public's love affair with this great performer will last as long as there are
love songs to be sung.
