It's Always 4 a.m.
Music written by Sammy Cahn (real name Samuel Cohen) / Ron Anthony.

Released in 1969 on the album Does Anybody Miss Me?. Released digitally remastered on CD on Shirley Bassey - The Collection.

Also sung by Murray Ross 1991 and Claire Martin 1995. Sammy Cahn, who wrote this song (together with Ron Anthony), was a famous song-writer who has written many well known, successful and award-winning compositions (died 1993). The "Wes Montgomery" mentioned in the lyrics was one of the great jazz guitarists (died 1968).

It could be mentioned at this point that the expression "It's Always 4:20" from the drugs scene (4:20 is an euphemism for pot smoking) has nothing to do with this song.

Lyrics

The world is cold, the night is still
The dream is old, and saws a thrill
Some cool DJ, begins to play, a Wes Montgomery score
When you're all alone
It's always 4 a.m.

It had to last, it would go on
But once it's passed, it's passed and gone
You just pretend, it didn't end
But make believe the blower
When you're all alone
It's always 4 a.m.

Your thoughts take wings, but nothing brings
That needed bit of slumber
The phone then rings, your pour heart sings
You left the phone, wrong number
The sun is bright, the sky's a blaze
But still it's night, there are no days
And worst of all, right down the hall
There's laughter through the door
When you're all alone
It's always 4 a.m.

Your thoughts take wings, but nothing brings
That needed bit of slumber
The phone then rings, your pour heart sings
You left the phone, wrong number
The sun is bright, the sky's a blaze
But still it's night, there are no days
And worst of all, right down the hall
There's laughter through the door
When you're all alone
It's always 4 a.m.
When you're all alone
It's always 4 a.m.
