Solitaire
Written by Neil Sedaka / Phil Cody.
Released on the 1982 album All By Myself. Shirley Bassey performed this song live in the TV special A Special Lady in 1983.
This song was recorded by Neil Sedaka himself
in 1972, but it was recorded first by Petula Clark in 1967 for her album "Just Petula".
The Carpenters reached position number 17 in the US Billboard in 1975 with this song, and they stayed for seven weeks in the charts.
Also Andy Williams had success with this song, and other artists that have performed it are for example Tom Jones, and Sheryl Crow.
There is also a completely different song with the same title, so don't confuse
them.
Lyrics
There was a man
A lonely man
Who lost his love
Through his indifference
A heart that cared
That went unshared
Until it died
Within his silence
And Solitaire 's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without a (her??) love
It always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing Solitaire
A little hope
Goes up in smoke
Just how it goes
Goes without saying
There was a man
A lonely man
Who would command
The hand he's playing
And Solitaire 's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without a (her??) love
It always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing Solitaire
Solitaire 's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing Solitaire
