Thought I'd Ring You
Music composed by Pino Marchese and Guido Deloo
Lyrics by Charles McLoughlin and Pierre Delanoë. Arranger: Roger Loubet

Shirley Bassey has never recorded this song alone. Two duet versions have been released. The first duet was with Alain Delon singing in French, which was released on a single in 1983 (instrumental version on the B-side) and on the B-side of a maxi-single in 1984.

The second version was with Al Corley singing English. This recording begins and ends with a studio-created live atmosphere. This version was released on the B-side of the single Remember (another duet with Al Corley.)

Additionally in 1984 a single was released with both versions on it, and both versions are available on the collection Solitaire.

The recording with Alain Delon is available re-released on some collection CDs. Sadly on most of the recordings they faded it out after about 3:21 minutes, but the original recording was 4:17 - 4:20. An example of the early faded version can be found on the Dutch compilation Het Beste Van.

Alain Delon
Short Biography

Born on 8 November 1935 in Sceaux, France, Alain Delon saw his parents, Edith and Fabien, separate when he was 4. He was then entrusted to the care of a host family, the Néreau's, in Fresnes, before being sent to a Catholic boarding school. At 17, he joined the Navy and set off for Indochina. In 1956, back in France, he did several "odd jobs" before, in 1957, being spotted by Yves Allégret, who offered him a role in "Quand la femme s'en mêle".

This was the start of a long career of 82 films, shot with the greatest directors, from Antonioni to Melville, and including Visconti, Clément, Verneuil, Malle, Losey, to mention but a few. Between 1962 and 1963 three films in which he starred won the highest awards: "L'Eclipse" by Antonioni carried off the Prix Spécial du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival; the following year, "Le Guépard" by Visconti won the Palme d'Or from that same festival; finally, "Mélodie en sous-sol", directed by Verneuil, was awarded, in the United States, the "Golden Globe" for the best foreign language film. After trying his hand at producing for the first time in 1964 with "L'insoumis", from 1968 Alain Delon was intensively involved in this work, producing 26 films until 1990.

In 1978 he created his own trademark and formed the "Alain Delon Diffusion SA" company in Geneva. His first fragrance, "AD", immediately met with huge commercial success. This was followed in 1981 by a fragrance for women "Le Temps d'Aimer". Champagne, cognac, watches, spectacles, clothing and accessories were gradually added to complete the range of his label.

Alain Delon also performed a duet with Dalida of the Mina song "Paroles, Paroles". Shirley Bassey has also recorded that song in English with Al Corley and it became Remember.

Lyrics
Alain Delon Version
With French translation

Shirley Bassey:
Thought I'd ring you
And tell you I'm in town Hope to see you
Yes, dinner would be fine Do you remember
When you and I first met? I know I do
Do You?

Alain Delon:
Oh non, je n'ai rien oublié
Oh no, I haven't forgotten anything
Rien oublié de cette étrange fille
Forgotten nothing about this strange life
Qui est venue traverser ma vie et ma ville
That came to cross my life and my town
Rien oublié non plus de cette drôle de nuit
Nor anything of this odd night
Dans nous sommes sortis, je crois
After which we became, I think
Amis?
Friends?

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused
Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Nice to see you
You've hardly changed, it's true
A little older
But time 's been kind to you
Do you remember a very special night
You know I do
Do you?

Alain Delon:
Oh oui, tu as bien fais d'appeler
Oh yes, you did right to call
Moi, moi je suis bouleversé
I, I am confused
Ça m'a complètement surpris, tu sais
It completely moved me, you know
De te voir à Paris, no je n'ai pas oublié encore
To see you in Paris, no I haven't forgotten yet
Ni le bain de la fontaine, ni la robe collée sur ton corps
Either the bath in the fountain, or the dress clinging on your body
Ni les mots du poème, comment pourrai-je oublier?
Or the words of the poem, how could I forget?

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused
Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Lost and confused
Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Lyrics
Al Corley Version

Shirley Bassey:
Thought I'd ring you
And tell you I'm in town
Hope to see you
Yes, dinner would be fine
Do you remember when you and I first met?

I know I do, do you?

Al Corley:
Hey baby
It's sure good to hear your voice again
Of course I haven't forgotten the day we first met
If you remember
We both had our eye on the same cab

And just as we got there
Mmhmm... it started to rain
I guess I'll never forget that look in your eye
Not that look

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused
Whatever could I do?
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trusted you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Nice to see you
You've hardly changed, it's true
A little older
But time's been kind to you
Do you remember a very special night?
You know I do, do you?

Al Corley:
Do I? .. Mmhmm, mmhmm
..
You know, that neither of us really cared where we were headin'
Aahh, not that night
And that cabbie dropped us off at that little French restaurant I knew
And what with the wine and the food
We just never noticed the time
I know I kept on wishing that night would never, ever end

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused
Whatever could I do?
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trusted you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Lost and confused
Whatever could I do
?
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trusted you?

Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you
