Michael & Lesley Gore

'Out Here On My Own' was co-written by brother and sister partnership Michael and Lesley Gore. Michael Gore received an Academy Award for the title song as Best Song which was sung by Irene Cara. 'Out Here On My Own' was sung by Irene Cara and was also part of the soundtrack and reached position number 19 in the US Billboard, it was also nominated for an Oscar.

Fame is an inspirational, highly popular film portraying a diverse group of teenagers striving for success at the Manhattan High School for the Performing Arts. The story is effectively split into a series of illuminating vignettes, with particular focus on a talented dancer-singer, Coco Hernandez (Irene Cara). It was also adapted into an equally successful television series.

Michael Gore has also composed the score to other successful productions. He was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Terms of Endearment' in 1983, and since then has also composed the score to 'Defending Your Life' and 'Broadcast News' amongst others.

With more than two dozen chart hits to her credit, Lesley Gore helped create the soundtrack to the Sixties with hits like "Judy's Turn To Cry," "She's A Fool," "That's The Way Boys Are," "You Don't Own Me" and her classic smash hit, "It's My Party," the song that skyrocketed her to fame in 1963 at the age of 16.

Irene Cara

Fame catapulted Irene Cara to stardom. As Coco Hernandez she sang both the title song Fame and the film’s second hit single Out There On My Own, resulting in a multi-platinum soundtrack that shot to the top of the charts. She went on to make Academy Award history that year when, for the first time, two songs from one film were nominated in the same category. Additionally, Irene is the only performer ever to sing two Academy Award nominated songs, Fame and Out There On My Own in one evening. It would be Fame that would go on to win the coveted award that year.

For actress/dancer/singer/songwriter Irene Cara, she is well known for co-writing and performing 'What a Feeling', the title song from the motion picture blockbuster 'Flashdance', which resulted in her being honoured by the entertainment industry with an Academy Award, two Grammy’s, a Golden Globe, plus a People’s Choice award all won within the same year.

Lyrics
Original English Version

Sabré de dónde yo partí,
pienso yo cuál es mi fin
simulando que tengo opción...
Así, sola yo.

Tratando siempre de alcanzar
esa estrella que podrá guiar
mi ansiedad por un amor...
Así, sola yo.

Ya vendrán igual que tú
a provocar la misma inquietud.
¡Dios mío, ayúdame! dime, oriéntame...
Quiero ser al fin mujer.

Y mis temores escondí
y se los amanecí;
si bien lloré mi decepción
así, sola yo.

Ya vendrán igual que tú
a provocar la misma inquietud.
¡Dios mío ayúdame! dime, oriéntame...
Quiero ser al fin mujer.

Sabré de dónde yo partí,
quién soy yo, cuál es mi fin.
Si bien perdí, buscaré el amor
así sin temor...

Así, sola yo.

Sometimes I wonder where I've been
Who I am, do I fit in
Make believin' is hard alone
Out here on my own

We're always provin' who we are
Always reachin' for that risin' star
To guide me far and shine me home
Out here on my own

When I'm down and feelin' blue
I close my eyes so I can be with you
Oh, baby be strong for me, baby belong to me
Help me through, help me need you

Until the morning sun appears
Making light of all my fears
I dry the tears I've never shown
Out here on my own

But when I'm down and feelin' blue
I close my eyes so I can be with you
Oh, baby be strong for me, baby belong to me
Help me through, help me need you

Sometimes I wonder where I've been
Who I am, do I fit in
I may not win, but I can't be thrown
Out here on my own

Out here on my own
