Fences

Original version by Barbara Dickson and Charlie Dore. Spanish lyrics by Leonardo Schultz

Released on the 1989 album La Mujer. The song was translated from the English song Rivals, written by Barbara Dickson and Charlie Dore.

Barbara Dickson

Rivals was taken from Barbara Dickson's 1985 album 'Gold', coming after her 1980 hit 'January, February' and recorded about the same time as her famous duet with Elaine Paige of 'I Know Him So Well'.

Receiver of the OBE in 2001, Barbara Dickson has successfully balanced careers in music and musical theatre. In the 1970s she recorded such hits as 'Answer Me' and 'Morning Comes Quickly'.

Dickson has been equally impressive as an actress. Working on many West End shows, and receiving countless awards for her contribution to musical theatre. She is also well known for her many TV roles, including her role in Kay Mellor's gritty and controversial drama series 'Band Of Gold' about a group of prostitutes.

Charlie Dore

Dore is a respected UK songwriter who originally trained as an actress. She is best known for her 1979 hit 'Pilot Of The Airwaves', which reached number 11 on the US charts.

Her solo career wasn't successful and she focused her varied talents on songwriting and acting. As well as repertory work with Michael Bogdanov, she co-starred with Jonathan Pryce in Richard Eyre's award-winning film The Ploughman's Lunch, and appeared in several television series.

Her other songwriting credits include many album tracks and a number of highly successful singles. 'Strut' was a worldwide hit for Sheena Easton. As well as 'Rivals' she has written a further 12 songs for Barbara Dickson. In 1992 she scored a UK number 1 with Jimmy Nail's 'Ain't No Doubt', which she co-wrote. She has also written 'Refuse To Dance', from Celine Dion's hugely successful album The Colour Of My Love, as well as tracks for Tina Turner, Barry Manilow and Yaz. More recently she has a writing credit on Hayley Westenra's successful debut album 'Pure'.

Dore released a solo album Things Change in 1995, but whilst Dore's ability, enthusiasm and commitment have helped many others to commercial success while she remains something of a hidden talent.

Lyrics
Original English Version

Viniste a mí,

vallas
para mí.

Y todos hablarán,
y todos juzgarán;

vallas.

It seems to me
there's no winner in this travesty
You said to me,
there's no magic, only chemistry
Oh, I can hear it now
The voice that told me I should walk away
We were dancing to disaster,
so we danced a little faster
anyway

'Cause we are rivals,
feel the competition, we are rivals,
loving opposition, we are rivals,
rivals
You and me

What's left for you to prove
You stand still and make a mountain move
What's left to lose
You just stop playing till the light improves
Oh, this foolish ?
is dancing with her fingers in your hair
She flicks her wrist and then if you resist there will be wreckage everywhere

'Cause we are rivals,
feel the competition, we are rivals,
loving opposition, we are rivals,
rivals
You and me

Why don't we hold fast
Why don't we hold our fire
We're always going to lose this battle
We'll never win

Repeat to fade:
Cause we are rivals,
feel the competition, we are rivals,
loving opposition, we are rivals,
rivals
You and me
