Tomorrow Morning
Music composed by John Kander and lyrics penned by Fred Ebb.

Recorded on November 23, 1976 but not released until 1994 on the collection Bassey - The EMI/UA Years 1959 - 1979. On the CD it is a remake that it is mixed by Tristram Penna with Ashley Alexander, they obviously re-mixed the original recording from 1976. This song became a recording out-take from the You Take My Heart Away album sessions.

For more information on the writers Kander and Ebb see Razzle Dazzle. This song is taken from their musical "The Happy Time". The Broadway premiere was on January 18, 1968, but it had only 286 performances. The actor and singer Robert Goulet won a Tony award 1968 as best actor in a musical for his performance in "The Happy Time", and Gower Champion received two Tony awards as best musical director and Choreographer, but nevertheless the musical flopped and had only 286 performances.

Here is a short synopsis of the musical: The theme of this enchanting musical is the conflict between a happy life at home and the joy of adventure. Jacques, a world-roving photographer, returns to his French-Canadian village hoping to recover the happy time of his childhood. He takes his fun-loving father and his teenage nephew, Bibi Bonnard, to visit a team of dancers who sing "Catch My Garter." The boy, fascinated by his uncle's world, proposes to drop out of school and become his assistant. Bibi's parents are hurt and angry and his teacher, a lovely girl secretly in love with Jacques, also disapproves. The conflict reaches a climax when Jacques' father sternly tells him he is stealing Bibi's affection. Jacques rallies to the challenge and disenchants Bibi with the idea of dropping out. "You did that well, my son," is the praise he has always longed for and now receives from his father. "The Happy Time" was originally based on a novel by Robert Fontaine.

Samuel Taylor had made a very successful non-musical Broadway play out of it (premiere January 24, 1950, and 614 performances, producer was Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers). In 1952 a movie "The Happy Time" was made out of the story.

Lyrics

When I arrive tomorrow morning
I want the music to be there
I want the bands out playing
Right across the square
The sun will shine tomorrow morning
He'd never dare to let me down
Send up a rocket saying
Shirley's back in town
Hey, now you can say I'm on my way
Hey, better get ready for today(??)

If I survive tomorrow morning
There'll be a great tomorrow night
No need to buy the candles
Shirley's all the light
Roll on tomorrow morning
Bad old days good night
I want the flats out flying
High across the square
Make it a better headline
Shirley's back in town
Hey, now you can say I'm on my way
Hey, better get ready for today(??)

If I survive tomorrow morning
There'll be a great tomorrow night
No need to hold the horses
Shirley's riding high
Roll on tomorrow morning
Here comes tomorrow morning
Bad old days bye bye
Good bye
Good bye
