The song is taken from the 1981 film "Arthur". When Carole Bayer Sager sat down with Burt Bacharach and Christopher Cross to write a theme song for the film comedy Arthur, she recalled a phrase from an unrecorded song she and Peter Allen had written years earlier: "When you get caught between the moon and New York City." It became part of the chorus of the theme song.

In 1981 Christopher Cross reached No. 1 in the US Billboard with this song, and it received an Oscar, the Academy Award for best song. It has also sung by Boston.
