Bryn Terfel

The Welsh born Bryn Terfel is a bass-baritone born in 1965. Like for many Welsh people, singing started during childhood, but in 1989 he won a gold-medal in the Guildhall School of Music in London, where he studied, for best singer. In the same year he represented Wales in the "Cardiff Singer of the Year"-contest; he came second and won the prize for "Singer of the World". In 1990 he had his opera début and the English music-magazine "Gramophone" chose him as the "Young Singer of the Year" in 1992. In 1993 he got the "International Classical Music Award" and more awards followed. In 1998 an opera album with him in the title role won a nomination for the "Best Opera Recording" Grammy Award and in 1999 he got a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album.
